AK Interactive have recently launched a new You Tube Channel the trailer promises Advance Techniques, Detailed Guides, Quick Tips & Tricks, Weathering Tips and Tutorials among other things. 


Just posted are Why Ak Acrylics Are Better Part 1 & Part 2 in which they show how AK's acrylics work. "Our new developed formula with ultra high coverage is created to make modeling easier than ever. We will show how they work on a PT-76, without priming nor diluting the acrylic. In the second part we will show some tips on weathering over the PT-76 and how AK's acrylics are used to give a really rusty look. Figure of the Week #60: Airfix 1/32nd Scale Plastic Cowboy

Our newest FOTW is this menacing looking cowboy and comes from Airfix and their wonderful Cowboys set. Airfix first released the Cowboys, Indians and 7th Cavalry sets in 1974-76. These are arguably, the finest sculpted 1/32nd scale plastic figures ever made. The sculptors at Airfix were able to get dynamic figures out of the two dimensional limitations of injection molding with their attention to detail, perfect proportions, and realistic poses. Any one of the poses in this set are worthy of the FOTW designation but this has always been one of my favorite ones. 

The sets were the first to include mounted figures and separate saddles. This set had yellow plastic Cowboys and saddles with grey horses. There were ten separate foot poses including a Sheriff, two mounted poses and two different horse positions (the horses would be the same for all three of the American West Series sets). When this set was re-released in 1995 it had four figures only and was moulded in olive green which is pictured here.

Airfix is probably second only to Marx in popularity, these figures are highly prized by collectors. Airfix made many different series of 1/32nd scale plastic figures including WWII troops, Modern troops, American West, Spacemen and even Soccer players.

Model Paint 42 - A database of over 4000 paints from 16 manufacturers designed just for modelers.

Model Paint 42 is a neat little iOS app for modelers. It features a powerful database of the more popular model paints in use today with nearly 4000 swatches!

Model 42 Selling Points:
- Never forget a color again and use this handy app when you want to find similar colors if the one you want is not to hand or out of stock. You can search across all the paints by color, name, code, manufacturer, finish (e.g. gloss, matt), paint type (e.g. acrylic, enamel) and paints you have in stock.  You can choose which ranges you want shown and in which order too so your favorites are always close to hand


- Contains lists of paints including the reference, name, part number and the color sample. You can see details of each paint plus equivalent colors from all the included ranges. Or you can select to see equivalents from only the ranges you have switched on, the same medium or the same finish. Konstantin Krevenko, Director of Zvezda Models has passed away

I'm saddened to report that the director of Zvezda models, Konstantin Krevenko, passed away on July 6th at the age of 52. Zvezda has been the top producer of scale models, war-games and 1/72nd scale figures in Russia for years. They produced a lot of great scale models and historical figures at affordable prices. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Krevenko several years back at the Nuremberg Toy Show and found him to be a warm and engaging man. It has also been reported that he also organized many charity programs for children.

R.I.P. And yet again, we are diminished.

AK Interactive July 2014 Releases + Price Reductions

The long awaited DAK Profile book that highlights AK releases for July is now in stock. We are also pleased to announce we were able to obtain new lower pricing on all AK Interactive products and we are passing these savings on to our customers.

The latest publication from AK Interactive is the D.A.K. Profile Guide featuring color profiles, along with brief details about each one, of equipment used by the Deutches Afrika Korps (DAK) between 1941 and the end in Tunisia in 1943. It also includes not only German and Italian vehicles, but captured Allied equipment put into DAK service as well.

Starting with a one page introduction that gives a ‘brief history' of the DAK,  there is then an introduction to discuss variations in paint colors, RAL standards, Italian and Allied paints, the weather conditions in North Africa and of course interpreting largely black and white archive photos.  It then breaks down into sections on Light Vehicles, such as motor-bikes and field cars such as the Kubelwagen and suchlike.  Then Medium/Heavy Vehicles that include a wide variety of German, Italian and British trucks, all in use by the DAK.  Section 3 is on Armored Fighting Vehicles, and these vary from light armored and scout cars such as the Sdkfz 222, AB41, and Dingo through all the many types of half-track and on to SP guns and tanks.  These in turn vary from the little Italian CV33, to Pz I, II, III, IV and Tiger.  Section four is on Artillery, and this includes towed artillery as well as some vehicle mounted Flak guns and which is brought to a close with the inclusion of the colours and markings used on the Fiesler Storch used by Rommel when he was commander of the DAK.  Then finally you have some notes and illustrations on German and Italian markings and some notes on German colors at different stages of the campaign.  Sprinkled throughout are some archive photos, showing some of the equipment featured in the profiles.

This is very much a book for modelers as well as of interest to historians. As AK Interactive have appropriate paints and weathering materials already in their range, the AKI 550 Africa Korps Colors Acrylic Set, and the AKI 068 DAK Weathering Set this will obviously complement those and intended no doubt to spark some ideas of to encourage you to have a go at some DAK modelling.  With over 170 profiles in the book, there is plenty to choose from.

Toys in the Attic - Operation X-500 by Deluxe Reading

The X-500 was one of the most exciting toys ever made. It hit the shelves in the early 1960s during the early years of the space craze/race. This very large, impressive play set was made by Deluxe Reading - which later became Topper Toys.
The X-500 consists of two areas or sections: The Base Defense System of molded red and black plastic with a working control panel of switches, knobs, bells, lights and missiles. It also contained the helicopter landing pad and missile launchers! 

The second section houses your Space Ship Launch area which includes a working elevator to take your astronaut up to the nose cone capsule, a crane to change your nose cones, a moving train to move the nose cones, the control booth, and the ramps and ladders. Figures with the play set included soldiers, astronauts, cameramen, and a dog. 






Operation X-500 was sold in supermarkets and drug stores for the whopping price of $11.88. I distinctly remember seeing it in the Red Owl Grocery store in Duluth which touched off a barrage of ‘I want one’ which nearly drove my mother insane. It took almost a whole week to break her down and she finally put down deposit on one for my birthday. Now we're talkin'! What was that dome-like instrument for, in the center of the control panel? Didn't know - didn't care. It looked so cool! I remember the glee I had in firing those missiles off in all directions, cranking the nose cone up onto the rocket over and over again. Fuel the rocket and 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1…Blast Off! Throw in defending the launch area from the evil commies with the base defense system and you have countless hours of play limited only by your imagination.


Deluxe Reading was a toy manufacturer based in Elizabeth, New Jersey USA which produced toys under several brand names including: Deluxe Topper, Deluxe Toy Creations, Deluxe Reading, Topper Corp., Topper Toy Group, and Topper Toys. The Topper Toys brand was most used in print advertisement and television commercials (children's TV).
